"바빌론 강가
그곳에 앉아
시온을 생각하며 눈물을 흘리네…."
1978년 흑인그룹 보니엠의 히트곡 '바빌론 강가에서'는 이렇게 시작된다. 경쾌하고 단순한 레게 리듬에 묵직한 주제를 담은 복음성가(CCM)는 구약성경에 나오는 역사적 사건에 근거하고 있다. '바빌론의 유수(幽囚)'로 알려진 유대인 포로 행렬이다.
2,600여년 전 바빌로니아의 정복왕 느부갓네살은 세차례에 걸쳐 예루살렘을 점령해야 했다. 처음엔 이집트를 정벌하는 과정에서 들렀으며, 나머지 두번은 반란을 진압하기 위해 짓밟았다. 그리고 당시의 관행에 따라 지도자급 유대인을 몽땅 포로로 잡아갔다. 유대인 포로들은 바빌론의 강가에서 예루살렘의 시온산을 그리워하는 망향가를 불렀던 것이다.
세계사의 요충지인 팔레스타인(현재의 이스라엘)에 터를 잡은 유대인은 수천년간 강대국의 외침에 부서지고 흩어져야 했다. 그렇지만 이들의 예루살렘 귀소(歸巢)본능은 독특해 부단히 시온으로 모여들었다. 1948년 이스라엘 건국은 2,000년 만에 얻은 꿈이다. 27일에도 200명의 프랑스 거주 유대인이 예루살렘으로 돌아왔다. 아리엘 샤론 총리의 "영구 귀향 환영"을 받으며.
그렇게 오랜 세월 유대인은 조국 없이도 민족적 정체성을 고수해 세계사의 주목을 받았다. 특별히 고향 팔레스타인을 떠나 사는 유대인을 디아스포라(Diaspora)라고 부른다. '흩어진 사람들'이란 뜻이다. 바빌론의 유수 이전 아시리아의 유수, 혹은 모세 이전 이집트에 정착한 요셉까지도 디아스포라로 볼 수 있다. 디아스포라는 비극적 상황에서 출발했지만 유대인의 종교적 결속과 영향력 강화라는 긍정적 성과를 거두었다. 위기이자 기회며, 도전이자 비전이다.
유대인의 종교가 세계화됐듯 디아스포라의 개념도 보편화됐다. 한민족의 디아스포라는 일제 침략으로 나라가 망한 20세기 초에 집중됐다. 식민치하를 겪으면서 2000만 한민족의 3분의 1 가량이 한반도를 떠난 것으로 추정된다. 지금도 약 600만명의 한민족이 전세계에 퍼져 있다. 최근 북녘 동포의 탈출 러시는 새로운 양상의 디아스포라다. 외침(外侵)이 아니라 내부적 모순의 결과다. 탈북자의 집단 입국은 21세기형 디아스포라를 재촉할 것으로 보인다. 그들의 예루살렘은 서울이다.
