로이 리히텐슈타인 뉴욕 출신의 팝아티스트. 미국의 대중적인 만화를 작품 소재로 선택하였다. 밝은 색채와 단순화된 형태, 뚜렷한 윤곽선, 기계적인 인쇄로 생긴 점(dot)들을 특징으로 한다. 저급문화로 알려진 만화를 회화에 도입해 일상과 예술의 경계를 허문 팝아트의 대표적인 작가이다.

[Roy Lichtenstein, 1923.10.27~1997.9.29] 1923년 자본주의의 상징인 뉴욕 맨하튼에서
태어나 1997년 뉴욕에서 생을 마감한 가장 뉴욕적이며 뉴욕을 대표하는 예술가이다. 1949년 오하이오 주립대학(Ohio State
University)에서 미술학 석사학위를 받았으며 10여 년간 미술을 가르쳤다. 초기에는 추상표현주의 양식으로 그림을 그리다 1960년
럿거스 대학교(Rutgers University) 교수 앨런 캐프로(Allan Kaprow)를 만나면서 팝 이미지에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 짐
다인(Jim Dine), 클래스 올덴버그(Claes Oldenburg),
조지 시걸(George Segal)
등을 만나는 것도 바로 이 시기이다. |
